Law looks ready to destroy some titans!  She's so amazing!  And those giant....things that carry the swords must have been a pain to carry around.  Still, this cosplay is very impressive.

Actually, I plan every detail_if possible_ of my costumes before buying anything, what materials I can use that will cost nothing, what things we cannot avoid to spend some money in. After this, we discuss a lot alltogether, how much we're enjoying the project, how much the making will be difficult, if we have a good concept (scenery, fx, etc.), in a nutshell : If it would really worth a try !
A lot of research, about the technical part so I can do my best to don't miss what I have to do and don't have to spend any more extra

For examples, some parts of my Decisive Pumpkin Keyblade were made from yoghourt packaging, Jack Frost's staff was a bamboo cut in my garden, Rivaille's 3DGear maneuver grapnel boxes are toilet paper rolls covered with fake leather and painted foam ! :dummy:
Also, Monsters University's varsity jackets were made from fabrics scraps, while N.6 Sion's mantle was already in my closet xD
All that to say, everybody can cosplay with their own possibilities, but when it is your main hobby, that you share it with your close friends and always want to try something new, the financial aspect will always remain (especially if you are a high schooler or a poor student >_>)
I think every cosplayer have their own way to deal with it, some sell their costumes (personnally, I'm very attached to some of them, but firstly I don't know if they are good enough to be sold :blushes:)/pictures/drawings/etc., some make costumes for others, some have a part-time job, some can control their " costume - pace " according to their budget.
We're most about letting us starving to death to complete a shooting ! :dummy: *kidding*

But to answer you honestly, I had a summer job in police during those last three years and as I haven't often the opportunity to go to events, that I don't smoke/drink/saturday night fever partying/shopping, so I essentially spend my money in cosplay, great food, books and family/friend's gifts U///U

If I could give an advice about it, the best way to keep enjoying cosplay without ending starved, is to alternate your " expensive projects " with " almost free costs projects " ! Don't cosplay for cosplaying ! Cosplay because you love what you are doing, with who you are doing...
Little by little, you will find a way to manage your budget and your desires ^ ^

lol wow, i guess so! you're so awesome at this haha. i only cosplay like once a year for a convention or maybe a school event or somethin. but still, it took me foreeeeever to make my Yuna cosplay last year with the help of my mom and i get what you mean by just finding stuff laying around to use, but you guys have like a new cosplay every few months! its so cool! I don't at all doubt that this is comparable with any other kind of art i guess :3
